George Vanden Bempde (born May 29, 1720, died April 29, 1792) was an important person in history. He held the title of the 3rd Marquess of Annandale. A Marquess is a high-ranking noble, like a duke or an earl. George took on this title when he was young.
The 3rd Marquess of Annandale
George Vanden Bempde was born George Johnstone. He became the 3rd Marquess of Annandale after his brother, James Johnstone, the 2nd Marquess, passed away in 1730. This meant George inherited the important noble title. He officially held this title until he died in 1792.
Changing His Name
George changed his last name from Johnstone to Vanden Bempde. This was a special condition for him to receive an inheritance. An inheritance means receiving money or property from someone who has died. In this case, it was from John Vanden Bempde. This name change was made official by a special law passed by Parliament in 1744.
The End of a Title
When George Vanden Bempde died in 1792, he was 71 years old. After his death, the title of Marquess of Annandale became "extinct." This means there was no one left to inherit the title, so it no longer existed.
