Discover the George W. Johnson Park Carousel
This amazing carousel is housed inside a cool wooden building. The building has 16 sides, making it quite unique! Inside, you'll find 36 beautiful horses. These horses are "jumpers," which means they move up and down as the carousel spins. There are also two special chariots where you can sit and enjoy the ride.
The carousel was built by a famous company called the Allan Herschell Company. They were known for making many wonderful carousels that brought joy to people all over.
A Special Gift to the Community
The George W. Johnson Park Carousel was a gift from George F. Johnson (1857–1948). He was the president of a big company called the Endicott Johnson Corporation. Mr. Johnson loved his community and wanted to give something special to the children and families of Broome County.
He didn't just donate one carousel; he actually gave six carousels to different parks across Broome County! His goal was to provide free fun for everyone, making sure that kids could enjoy these rides without having to pay.
A Historic Landmark
Because of its history and importance, the George W. Johnson Park Carousel was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. This means it's recognized as a significant historical site that should be protected and remembered for future generations. It's a piece of local history that continues to bring smiles today!
