George Tennant was a vital part of the first Byrd Antarctic Expedition. This big adventure aimed to explore the South Pole. George's main job was being the chief steward. This meant he was in charge of managing the food, supplies, and daily needs for the whole team.

His Role on the Expedition

In 1928, when the expedition first set off, George worked in the kitchen, also known as the galley, on their ship. The ship was named City of New York. He made sure everyone had good meals during their long journey.

After reaching Antarctica, George stayed there for the winter. He was the cook at their base, which was called Little America. Imagine cooking for a whole team in the freezing cold of Antarctica! His cooking helped keep the explorers strong and healthy during their tough mission.

A Special Honor

Because of his hard work and dedication, George Tennant received a special award. In 1931, he was one of 81 people to get the Byrd Antarctic Expedition Medal. This medal honored those who bravely faced the challenges of exploring Antarctica.

Tennant Peak: A Mountain Named After Him

To remember George Tennant's contributions, a mountain peak was named in his honor. This peak, called Tennant Peak, is located in the Rockefeller Mountains in Antarctica. It was discovered on January 26, 1929. The leader of the expedition, Richard E. Byrd, decided to name the peak after George Tennant to recognize his important role in the journey.
