Georgene Louis is an American lawyer and politician. She served as a member of the New Mexico House of Representatives for District 26. She held this important role from 2013 until 2023.

Early Life and Education

Louis was born and grew up in the Acoma Pueblo. This is a Native American community in New Mexico. She went to the University of New Mexico. There, she earned two degrees: a bachelor's degree and a law degree (called a Juris Doctor).

Public Service Career

Georgene Louis has worked in the area of tribal law. This type of law deals with the legal systems of Native American tribes. She also took part in a special training program called Emerge New Mexico. This program helps women learn how to run for public office.

In 2015, Louis was one of five Native American lawmakers serving in the New Mexico House of Representatives. She represented District 26. This district includes part of West Albuquerque. About 30,000 people live in this area.

As a representative, Louis led important groups called committees. She was the chair of the House State Government, Elections, and Indian Affairs committees. She was also a member of the Judiciary and Rules & Order of Business Committees. These committees help make decisions about new laws. She was re-elected to her position five times.

Louis also served as the main lawyer for the Pueblo of Tesuque. After serving her last term as a representative for District 26, she decided not to run for re-election.
