Georgene Louis is an American lawyer and politician. She was a member of the New Mexico House of Representatives. She represented District 26 from 2013 to 2023.
Growing Up and School
Georgene Louis was born and grew up in the Acoma Pueblo. This is a Native American community in New Mexico. She went to the University of New Mexico. There, she earned two degrees. One was a bachelor's degree. The other was a law degree, called a Juris Doctor.
Her Work as a Leader
Georgene Louis is an expert in tribal law. This means she works with laws that affect Native American tribes. She took part in a special training program. It was called Emerge New Mexico. This program helps women learn how to run for office.
In 2015, Georgene Louis was one of five Native American lawmakers. They served in the New Mexico House of Representatives. She represented District 26. This area includes part of West Albuquerque. Most people in this district are Latino. About 4% of the people are Native American.
As a representative, she led important committees. She was the chair of the House State Government, Elections, and Indian Affairs committees. She also worked on the Judiciary and Rules & Order of Business Committees. She was elected five times to her position.
Louis also works as a general counsel for the Pueblo of Tesuque. This means she is a top lawyer for the Pueblo. In 2021, she ran for a special election. This was for a seat in the U.S. Congress. She did not win that election. After her term ended in 2023, she chose not to run for re-election.

Georgene Louis has a daughter named Jonisha. She had her daughter when she was in high school. Georgene Louis and her daughter live in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
