Georges Gauthier was an important religious leader in Canada. He was born on October 9, 1871, and passed away on August 31, 1940. He became a high-ranking archbishop in Montreal. He was also the very first rector of the Université de Montréal, a major university.
Life of Georges Gauthier
Georges Gauthier was born in the city of Montreal, in Quebec. His parents were François-Xavier Gauthier and Marie Généreux.
He chose to dedicate his life to the church. In 1894, he was ordained as a priest. This means he officially became a Catholic priest. Later, in 1912, he was ordained as a bishop, which is an even higher position in the church.
On September 20, 1939, Georges Gauthier was appointed the third archbishop of Montreal. He served in this important role until his death in 1940.
His Role at the University
In 1917, Georges Gauthier was given a special job at the Université Laval à Montréal. He became its vice-rector. This role is like being a vice-principal for a university.
When this school became its own independent university in 1920, it was renamed the Université de Montréal. Georges Gauthier became its very first rector. A rector is the main leader of a university, similar to a president. He served as rector until 1923.
