Georgette Koko, born on March 16, 1953, is an important politician from Gabon. She has held several key roles in her country's government. From 2006 to 2009, she served as a Deputy Prime Minister, focusing on the environment. Since 2016, she has been the President of the Economic and Social Council.

Early Life and Education

Georgette Koko was born in Makokou, a city in the Ogooué-Ivindo Province of Gabon. She studied in Gabon first, then continued her education in France.

Career in Public Service

After finishing her studies, Koko began her career working for the Ministry of the Environment.

  • In April 1989, she was put in charge of studies at the National Anti-Pollution Center.
  • By August 1995, she became the Director of the Environment.
  • Later, she worked as an advisor to the Director-General of the Environment from 2002 to 2004.
  • From 2004, she advised the Minister of the Environment.

Serving as Deputy Prime Minister

On January 21, 2006, Georgette Koko was appointed to a very important position: Deputy Prime Minister for the Environment, the Protection of Nature, and Research and Technology. This made her the second-highest-ranking person in the government, right after the Prime Minister, Jean Eyeghé Ndong.

Her responsibilities changed a few times:

  • On January 25, 2007, she became Deputy Prime Minister for the Environment, the Protection of Nature, and Urban Affairs.
  • On December 29, 2007, her title changed again to Deputy Prime Minister for the Environment, the Protection of Nature, and Sustainable Development.

Political Party Leadership

In September 2008, at a big meeting of the Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG), Georgette Koko was chosen as one of the party's Vice-Presidents. This showed her growing importance within the political party.

In January 2009, she ran in the 2009 Gabonese Senate election for the PDG party in Makokou. She won the election and became a Senator.

Important National Announcement

On June 8, 2009, a sad event happened: President Omar Bongo passed away. Georgette Koko was the one who announced this news to the people of Gabon on television. She told them that the President had died from a heart attack. She also asked everyone to stay united and strong during this difficult time.

Later Roles

After President Bongo's son, Ali Bongo Ondimba, won the 2009 Gabonese presidential election in August 2009, Georgette Koko left her government position on October 17, 2009.

However, she continued to serve as a Senator.

  • In April 2012, she was chosen to lead the PDG Parliamentary Group in the Senate.
  • After the Senate election in December 2014, Koko was elected as the Second Vice-President of the Senate on February 27, 2015.
  • A year later, on March 10, 2016, she was appointed as the President of the Economic and Social Council. This council advises the government on economic and social issues.
