Georgina Ann Stirling (born April 3, 1867, died April 21, 1935) was a famous opera singer from Newfoundland. She was known by her stage name, Marie Toulinquet. Georgina was born in Twillingate, in Newfoundland. She became a world-famous singer who performed in opera houses across Europe and the United States. She was Newfoundland's first opera singer and was often called The Nightingale of the North.

Georgina Stirling's Amazing Music Journey

Georgina Stirling was the daughter of Ann (Peyton) and William Stirling. She went to school in Twillingate and Toronto. Later, she traveled to Paris, Italy, and Germany to study singing. She chose the stage name "Toulinguet" because it was the old French name for her hometown, Twillingate. When she was just fifteen, she played the organ at her local church. Early in her career, she also helped start the Dorcas Society.

While in Paris, Georgina studied with a famous teacher named Madame Mathilde Marchesi. A big opera company from Milan discovered her talent there. She went on tours and performed with many opera groups. These included the Opera Company of New York City, the Boston Harmony Orchestral Society, and the Scalchi Opera Company. At the very best part of her singing career, she developed a throat problem. This sadly cut her singing career short. However, she later made a comeback as a concert artist, performing in shows.

Georgina Stirling eventually returned to her hometown of Twillingate. She lived there with her sister Rose. Georgina passed away on April 21, 1935, which was Easter Sunday. Her grave is located at Snelling Cove. It looks out over the beautiful ocean.
