Gerard was married to a woman who was a daughter of Louis the Pious, a very important emperor. Her name was either Rotrud or Hildegard. Together, Gerard and his wife had several children:
- Ranulf I of Poitiers, who became a powerful leader known as the Duke of Aquitaine. He was born around 815 and lived until 866. He married a daughter of Rorgo, who was the Count of Maine.
- Gerhard II, who later became the Count of Limousin. He passed away in 879.
