Gerhard I of Metz was an important count who lived a long time ago, from about 875 to 910. He was a powerful leader in a region called Metz. His father, Adalhard, was also a count of Metz.

Gerhard I of Metz was a count who lived in a time when different leaders often fought for control. He was born around 875. He wanted to rule a large area called Lotharingia. He tried to do this with his brothers, Steven and Matfried I.
Conflicts and Battles
In 897, Gerhard and his brothers had a big disagreement with King Zwentibold. At first, their plans were not accepted. But they soon made peace with the king.
Later, Gerhard and his brother Matfried led a rebellion. In the year 900, they fought King Zwentibold in a battle near Susteren. Gerhard and Matfried won this battle, and King Zwentibold was killed.
In 906, Gerhard and Matfried went to war again. This time, they fought against a leader named Count Conrad.
Gerhard I was killed in a battle on June 22, 910. He was fighting against the Bavarian army when he died.
Gerhard's Family Life
After August 13, 900, Gerhard married a woman named Oda. She was the widow of King Zwentibold. Oda was born around 880. She was the daughter of Otto I, Duke of Saxony.
Gerhard and Oda had several children together:
- Wigfried (died July 9, 953) became an important church leader. He was an abbot and later the archbishop of Cologne from 924 to 953.
- Oda (died before May 18, 963) married Gozlin, Count of Bidgau and Methingau.
- An unknown daughter.
- Godfrey (died before 949) became the count of Jülichgau.
After Gerhard died, Oda of Saxony married again. She married Eberhard, who was a count in Oberlahngau.
