Long ago, if people in Laz villages believed Germakochi was nearby, they would sometimes leave their homes to avoid him!

What is Germakochi Like?

Germakochi is often described as a very tall and hairy creature. He lives deep within the forests. Imagine something that looks like a mix between a monkey and a human – that's often how people picture him!

Interestingly, Germakochi is said to be quite curious. He sometimes likes to interact with humans he meets in the forest. But beware, there's a special way to get away from him!

How to Escape Germakochi

According to the myths, if you ever encounter Germakochi, there's a trick to make him leave. You need to make a fire! When Germakochi sees fire, he is drawn to it. But as soon as he touches the flames, he instantly catches fire himself.

After catching fire, he quickly runs towards the Black Sea. He then jumps into the water to put out the flames. This mythical figure also shares some similarities with the Kallikantzaros, another creature from Anatolian folklore.

What Does the Name Mean?

The name "Germakochi" comes from the Laz language. In Laz, the word germa means "mountain." The word kochi means "man." So, when you put them together, Germakochi simply means "man of the mountain."
