A Look Back at Germantown
The main road in Germantown is Palmer Street. It was named after General Joseph Palmer. Back in 1752, General Palmer and Richard Cranch had a plan. They wanted to create a special community for German immigrants. This community would focus on making things like glass and woven goods.
The First Settlers
A group of glassmakers and weavers from Germany were supposed to settle here in the 1750s. However, the plan for this community didn't work out. By 1760, the idea had failed. Even so, the name "Germantown" stuck around. Many of the German settlers eventually moved away. Some went to Waldoboro, Maine, to work as servants.
Growing Industries
By the late 1700s, shipbuilding became very important. Germantown was a great spot for building ships. This was because of its perfect location by the water. Later, in 1861, a ferry service started. This ferry connected Germantown with Quincy Point.
