Gero (archbishop of Magdeburg) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Gero was an important church leader in the Middle Ages. He was the Archbishop of Magdeburg from 1012 until he passed away on October 21, 1023.

Gero's parents were Dedo Wodenswege and Eilika. Some historians believe he might have been related to a famous person named Gero the Great.

Becoming a Church Leader

When the previous Archbishop of Magdeburg, Archbishop Walthard, died in 1012, King Henry II chose Gero to be the next archbishop. King Henry II was the ruler of the Holy Roman Empire at that time.

There was another person, Otto, who the church officials (called cathedral canons) wanted for the job. But King Henry II's choice, Gero, became the new archbishop.

A Conflict Over Land

Gero was a very determined leader. Between 1016 and 1017, he had a big disagreement with Bernard, who was a powerful noble known as the Margrave of the Nordmark. A margrave was a ruler of a border region.

Gero and Bernard argued and fought over land. Bernard's soldiers even attacked the city of Magdeburg. However, in 1017, they reached an agreement. Bernard had to pay Gero 500 pounds of silver as a way to make up for the damage and end the conflict.
