Theobald and Gertrude in a 17th-century painting

Gertrude of Dagsburg (died March 30, 1225) was an important noblewoman in medieval times. She was the ruling countess of Metz and Dagsburg from 1212 until her death. She also became the Duchess of Lorraine when she married Theobald. Gertrude was also a talented trouvère, which means she was a poet and composer of songs.

She was the only daughter and heir of Albert II, who was the Count of Metz and Dagsburg. This meant she would inherit her father's lands and titles.

Her Life and Marriages

Gertrude was named after her mother, Gertrude of Baden. Historians believe she was born around 1190.

When her father passed away in 1212, Gertrude became the Countess of Metz and Dagsburg. By this time, she was already married to Theobald. He soon became the Duke of Lorraine in 1213. When they married, her husband took charge of her lands. Sadly, Theobald died in early 1220. They did not have any children together.

In May 1220, Gertrude married for a second time. Her new husband was Theobald IV of Champagne, who was still very young. This marriage was not approved by the Emperor Frederick II. In 1222, Theobald ended their marriage. Some say it was because they were distantly related. Others say it was because Gertrude could not have children.

In 1224, Gertrude married for a third time. Her last husband was Simon III, the Count of Leiningen. However, Gertrude passed away within a year, on March 30, 1225. She was buried in the abbey of Sturzelbronn. After her death, her husband inherited her county.

Her Creative Works

Gertrude was likely the Duchess of Lorraine who wrote two beautiful poems in Old French. One poem, called Un petit devant le jour, can be found in many old books. Some of these even include the music that went with the poem. The other poem is found in only one special old book. These poems show Gertrude's talent as a trouvère.
