Gervase of Blois facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Gervase of Blois was an important leader at Westminster Abbey in England. He was the Abbot there from 1138 until about 1157. Some older history books say he wasn't very good at managing the abbey's money and lands. However, modern historians have looked at his time again and have a different opinion about how well he did his job.

Who Was Gervase of Blois?

Gervase of Blois was the son of King Stephen and a woman named Damette. Because his father was the King, Gervase was made the Abbot of Westminster Abbey in the second half of 1138. The abbey probably hoped to get more money from the King because his son was in charge.

Becoming an Abbot

Gervase was quite young when he became abbot. Even so, he likely went to an important church meeting called the Second Lateran Council the next year. He worked with another church leader, Prior Osbert of Clare. Together, they tried to get King Edward the Confessor made into a saint. This effort was not successful. If King Edward had become a saint, many people would have visited his tomb at the abbey. This would have brought in a lot of money and fame for Westminster Abbey.

His Time at Westminster Abbey

Pope Innocent II told Gervase to improve how the abbey's lands and money were managed. Historians have debated if the Pope was talking about old problems or new ones that started during Gervase's time. Later, Pope Eugene III seemed to think Gervase was a good abbot. He gave special rights to the abbey in the 1140s. Gervase also got along well with other important church leaders.

A Change in Kings

In 1154, King Stephen died. His old rival, King Henry II, became the new king. This put Gervase's position as abbot at risk. King Henry II accused Gervase of not handling the abbey's lands properly. Because of this, Gervase was removed from his job in 1157. He was dismissed without a formal trial and died soon after. Master Laurence from Durham, who supported the new king, took Gervase's place.
