Gesualdo Bufalino was an Italian writer. He was born in Comiso, Italy, on November 15, 1920. He passed away on June 14, 1996.
About Gesualdo Bufalino
Gesualdo Bufalino was born in Comiso, a town in Sicily, Italy. He loved to learn and studied literature. For most of his life, he worked as a high school teacher in Comiso.
After World War II, Gesualdo Bufalino spent some time in a hospital. This experience gave him ideas for his novel, Diceria dell'untore. The English title for this book is The Plague Sower.
He started writing The Plague Sower in 1950. He finished it much later, in 1971. The book was finally published in 1981. This happened thanks to his friend, the famous writer Leonardo Sciascia, who saw how talented Bufalino was.
His Famous Books and Awards
Diceria dell'untore won the Premio Campiello. This is a very important Italian literary award.
In 1988, another one of his novels, Le menzogne della notte, won the Strega Prize. This is also a major award for Italian writers. The English title for this book is Night's Lies.
In 1990, Gesualdo Bufalino received the Nino Martoglio International Book Award.
Today, a library in his hometown is named after him. It is called the Biblioteca di Bufalino, which means "Bufalino's Library".
