Early Years and Power
Gilbert was a very important leader in Lotharingia. He became the Duke of Lotharingia, a powerful position. The exact start of his rule is not fully clear. Records from 910 mention a "Duke of Lotharingia," which might have been Gilbert.
Changing Alliances
In 911, Lotharingia supported King Charles III, also known as Charles the Simple. Charles was removed from power in West Francia in 922. However, he remained king in Lotharingia. He tried to win back West Francia but was imprisoned in 923.
After this, Gilbert changed his loyalty. In 923, he and Archbishop Ruotger of Trier invited King Henry I to invade Lotharingia. Henry I was an Ottonian king. But in 924, Gilbert changed his mind again. He then supported King Rudolf of West Francia.
Marriage and Loyalty
King Henry I eventually took control of Lotharingia in 925. Gilbert then promised his loyalty to Henry. To make their relationship stronger, Gilbert married Henry's daughter, Gerberga of Saxony. This marriage helped secure the bond between Gilbert and the powerful Ottonian family.
Rebellion and Death
After King Henry I died in 936, his son Otto I became the new ruler. Gilbert decided to rebel against Otto I in 939. He changed his loyalty once more, this time to King Louis IV of West Francia.
For three years, Gilbert was almost completely independent. But in 939, Otto I's army defeated him at the Battle of Andernach. Gilbert was captured, but he managed to escape. While trying to get away, he drowned in the Rhine river. After Gilbert's death, the region of Lorraine was given to Henry I, Duke of Bavaria.
