Gilbert Kennedy of Dunure, born on February 22, 1405, was an important Scottish lord. His father was Sir James Kennedy, and his mother was Lady Mary Stewart, who was the daughter of King Robert III of Scotland. Gilbert Kennedy became one of six special advisors, called Regents, who helped rule Scotland when King James III was young. This happened after King James II died in 1460. Gilbert Kennedy passed away on March 27, 1489.

Gilbert Kennedy married Catherine Maxwell. Her father was Herbert Maxwell, the 1st Lord Maxwell. Together, they had children:
- John Kennedy, who later became the 2nd Lord Kennedy. He was the father of David Kennedy, the 1st Earl of Cassilis.
- Catherine Kennedy, who was the mother of Hugh Montgomerie, the 1st Earl of Eglinton.
After 1460, Gilbert Kennedy married a second time to Isabel Ogilvy. She was the daughter of Sir Walter Ogilvy of Lintrathen. Isabel had been married before to Patrick Lyon, the 1st Lord Glamis.

Gilbert Kennedy was given the title of the 1st Lord Kennedy between 1457 and 1458. This was a very important title in Scotland.
He also held other significant positions. He was the Keeper of Lochdoun Castle. This meant he was in charge of looking after the castle. He was also the Constable of Stirling Castle, a very important castle in Scotland. He received this role in 1466.
By this time, he was already serving as a Regent of Scotland. A Regent is someone who governs a country when the king or queen is too young or unable to rule. Gilbert Kennedy took on this role after King James II died.
