Gilbert V de Umfraville facts for kids
Gilbert V de Umfraville (born July 1390 – died 22 March 1421) was an important English nobleman. People often called him the "Earl of Kyme." He played a part in the long conflict known as the Hundred Years War. Sadly, he died fighting in the Battle of Baugé in 1421. He was battling an army made up of French and Scottish soldiers.
About Gilbert V de Umfraville
Gilbert was born in July 1390. He was the only son of Thomas II de Umfraville and Agnes Grey. His family lived at Harbottle Castle. When his father passed away on 12 February 1391, Gilbert was only 28 weeks old. This meant he was too young to take over his father's lands and titles.
His Marriage and Family
In 1413, Gilbert married Anne. Her father was Ralph Neville, 1st Earl of Westmorland. Anne's mother was Margaret, who was the daughter of Hugh Stafford, 2nd Earl of Stafford. Gilbert and Anne did not have any children.
His Death in Battle
Gilbert died fighting the French army at the Battle of Baugé on 22 March 1421. Because he had no children, his family's lands were divided. His five sisters and their husbands shared the estates. Gilbert's uncle, Robert de Umfraville, received the lands in Redesdale and Kyme.
