If you enjoy mysteries, you'll find three books in this series: Gilda Joyce: Psychic Investigator, Gilda Joyce: The Ladies of the Lake, and Gilda Joyce: The Ghost Sonata.
The Mystery Begins
Gilda Joyce is a lively 13-year-old girl. She dreams of becoming a psychic investigator. Gilda lives in Detroit with her mom and older brother, Stephen. Her father passed away two years ago. Before he died, he gave Gilda his typewriter. He called it a "magic typewriter." Gilda keeps it close and uses it in her investigations. She even tries automatic writing with it.
One day, Gilda tells her class she's going to San Francisco for the summer. This isn't true, but she wants to make it happen! She looks for ways to get there. Soon, she learns about her uncle, Lester Splinter. He is her mother's second cousin. Gilda has never met him before.
Uncle Lester's sister, Melanie Splinter, died recently. She fell from a tower in their backyard. Gilda sees this as a perfect chance for an investigation! She quickly writes a letter to Mr. Splinter. She asks if she can stay at his house for the summer.
Mr. Splinter's assistant, Summer, finds Gilda's letter. Summer thinks Gilda sounds very interesting. She writes back and invites Gilda to stay. She even sends Gilda an airline ticket!
Meeting Juliet Splinter
Meanwhile, Mr. Splinter's 13-year-old daughter, Juliet, is recovering from an accident. She has a broken rib and a twisted ankle. One day, Juliet was climbing the stairs after ballet class. She thought she saw her Aunt Melanie at the top of the staircase. This made her faint and fall down the stairs.
When Gilda arrives in San Francisco, things are not as she imagined. She pictured a sunny paradise. Instead, the summer fog covers everything. The mansion where she'll stay doesn't seem like much fun. Her only company will be Juliet Splinter. Juliet is small, quiet, and a bit mean. She is still recovering from her accident. This makes Gilda's excitement fade a little.
But Gilda doesn't give up. She starts investigating. Soon, Gilda and Juliet become an unexpected team. They work together to find out what really happened to Melanie Splinter. They solve the whole mystery. After their adventure, Gilda returns to her normal life.
