Who Was Giles Calvert?
Giles Calvert was born in 1612. His father, George Calvert, was a vicar in a place called Meare. Giles and his brother, also named George, worked together as publishers and booksellers. Their shop was called the Black Spread Eagle, located in St Paul's Churchyard in London.
Publishing Quaker Works
Giles and his brother were known for publishing early books and pamphlets by a religious group called the Quakers. The Quakers were a new Christian movement that believed in a simple way of life and peaceful actions.
Giles Calvert even published three works by his own sister, Martha Simmonds. She became a Quaker in 1654 or 1655 and wrote several pamphlets. In 1655, Giles published her books titled When the Lord Jesus Came to Jerusalem and A Lamentation for the Lost Sheep of the House of Israel. Later, he also published her work called O England, thy Time is Come.
