Gilles Latulippe (born August 31, 1937 – died September 23, 2014) was a famous actor, comedian, and theatre director from Quebec, Canada. He was known for his funny performances and for managing his own theatre. Gilles Latulippe was a very important person in the history of comedy in Quebec. In 1998, a newspaper called Le Journal de Montréal even named him Quebec's favorite actor!

Gilles Latulippe's Amazing Career

Gilles Latulippe was born in Montreal in 1937. He started studying theatre with famous teachers like François Rozet. He met Paul Buissonneau, who gave him his first acting jobs. Soon, another well-known person, Gratien Gélinas, noticed his talent. Gélinas gave him a part in a play called Bousille et les justes in 1959. This was a big start for him!

Becoming a Comedy Star

During the 1960s, Gilles Latulippe became a huge star in Montreal. He was famous for his shows in cabarets and comedy theatres. At the same time, he also started a very successful career on television. People loved to watch him!

Founding the Théâtre des Variétés

In 1967, Gilles Latulippe did something amazing: he opened his own theatre called the Théâtre des Variétés of Montreal. This theatre was incredibly popular! It had over 7,000 shows, and people always filled the seats. What's even more impressive is that the Variétés theatre ran for 33 years without any money from the government. It finally closed its doors in 2000. Even after closing the theatre, Gilles Latulippe continued to be very active in acting and comedy until his last years.

He was also recognized by Canada and Quebec for his contributions:

  • In 2003, he became a member of the Order of Canada. This is one of the highest honors a Canadian can receive.
  • In 2009, he was made a knight of the National Order of Quebec. This is a very important award from the province of Quebec.
  • In 2000, he became a knight of the Order of La Pléiade.

Gilles Latulippe passed away in 2014. The mayor of Montreal, Denis Coderre, announced that flags at city hall would be lowered to half-mast to honor him. Gilles Latulippe was a true legend in Quebec entertainment.
