Giorgio Morales (born March 26, 1932 – died November 29, 2020) was an Italian politician. He is best known for serving as the Mayor of Florence, a famous city in Italy, from 1989 to 1995.

Who Was Giorgio Morales?
Giorgio Morales was a dedicated public servant who spent many years working for the city of Florence. He was involved in politics from a young age and worked his way up to become the city's leader.
Early Life and Education
Giorgio Morales was born in La Spezia, Italy, on March 26, 1932. He was interested in politics early on. He first joined the Popular Unity (UP) party. Later, in 1957, he became a member of the Italian Socialist Party (PSI).
He studied Political Science at the Cesare Alfieri Institute, which is part of the University of Florence. After finishing his studies, he started working in government. In 1970, he became the coordinator of the Legislative Office for the Regional Council. This role involved helping to create and manage laws for the region.
Starting in Politics
Morales was elected as a city councilor in Florence in 1975. He served in this role without a break until 1989. As a councilor, he handled different important tasks.
In 1975, he was put in charge of decentralization. This meant he helped spread out government services to different parts of the city. From 1979 to 1983, he served as the deputy mayor. He also worked as the councilor for culture under several mayors. This role allowed him to support arts and cultural events in Florence.
Becoming Mayor of Florence
Giorgio Morales was elected Mayor of Florence two times. In 1989, he became mayor, taking over from Massimo Bogianckino. He was supported by several political parties, including the PSI and the PCI.
In 1990, he formed a new government team. This team included members from five different parties, known as the Pentapartito. He ran for mayor again in 1995 but was not re-elected. Mario Primicerio became the new mayor. After this, Morales continued to serve on the city council until 1999.
Challenges as Mayor
In 1990, Mayor Morales and the entire city council resigned from their positions. This happened during a time when there were public concerns and disagreements within the government. Morales had worked to get police support from Rome to help with safety in Florence. He later expressed that he was happy with efforts to control crime in the city.
After Being Mayor
Giorgio Morales was known for his love of culture. He had a special interest in fine wines and art books. He was always a strong supporter of the arts.
