Giovanni Do - Painter's Studio
The Painter's Studio, a painting by Giovanni Do.

Giovanni Do (born before 1617 – died around 1656) was a Spanish painter who worked mostly in the city of Naples, Italy. He is known for his unique style of painting, which often used strong contrasts between light and dark.

Early Life and Moving to Naples

Giovanni Do was born in a town called Xàtiva in Spain. This town is close to Valencia. We don't know his exact birth year, but it was before 1617.

By the year 1626, Giovanni Do had moved to Naples, a big city in Italy. That same year, he got married to a woman named Grazia. She was the sister of another painter named Pacecco De Rosa. Important painters like Giovanni Battista Caracciolo and Jusepe de Ribera were witnesses at his wedding. This shows that Giovanni Do was already connected to important artists in Naples.

His Painting Style

Giovanni Do is famous for a style of painting called tenebrism. This means he used very strong shadows and bright light to make his paintings dramatic. It often made the scenes look a bit dark or serious.

His most well-known painting is called Adoration of the Shepherds. This painting shows shepherds visiting baby Jesus. It was made for a church in Naples called the Church of Pietà dei Turchini. This painting is a great example of his tenebrist style, with its deep shadows and bright areas.

Another painting of the Adoration of the Shepherds is kept in a famous art academy in Madrid, Spain. This painting is thought to be a copy of an original work by the famous Spanish painter Jusepe de Ribera, who was also a friend of Giovanni Do.
