Giriraj Kishore (born July 8, 1937 – died February 9, 2020) was an important Indian writer. He was known for his stories and essays. In 2007, the President of India honored him with the Padma Shri award. This is one of India's highest civilian awards. He lived in Kanpur and used to work for the government. He also received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1992 and the Vyas Samman in 2000. In 2002, Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University gave him an honorary Ph.D.
About Giriraj Kishore
Giriraj Kishore was born in Muzzafarnagar in 1937. His father was a land owner. However, Giriraj Kishore believed in fairness for everyone. He did not like the old landowning system. Because of his strong beliefs, he left home when he was young. He then became a follower of Mahatma Gandhi's ideas.
He earned his master's degree in social work. He studied at The Institute of Social Sciences, Agra. Later, he received special study grants. These were called "emeritus fellowships." He got one from the University Grants Commission from 1998 to 1999. He also had a fellowship at the Indian Institute of Advanced Study in Shimla from 1999 to 2001.
His Career and Family
Giriraj Kishore worked in different government jobs for over 30 years. He was a registrar at Kanpur University. This university is now known as Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University. He also worked at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur.
He was a member of the Sahitya Akademi working committee. This group helps promote Indian literature. He was also part of the Railway Board of the Government of India.
Giriraj Kishore was married to Mrs. Meera Kishore. They had two daughters and one son. Both of his daughters are married. After he retired from IIT Kanpur, he lived in Kanpur. He also wrote articles regularly for newspapers. He was the editor of a Hindi magazine called Aakar.
