The Giroux Furniture Company Building is an old and important building in St. Albans, Vermont. It's located at 10-18 Catherine Street. This building was built in two steps, first in 1896 and then again in 1905. It helps us remember the city's history with railroads. For many years, it was a busy store. In 2006, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places, which means it's a special place worth protecting.

About the Building's Design

The old Giroux Furniture Company Building is in the middle of St. Albans. It sits on a block surrounded by Market, Lake, and Catherine Streets. The building is right across Lake Street from the Central Vermont Railway Office. It's also across Market Street from the main railroad tracks.

Unique Shape and Materials

The front part of the building has a cool triangular shape. This is because Market Street used to angle differently. The building has two floors. It's made of wood, but it's covered with brick on the outside. One side of the building, which is angled, has a single-story showroom. Behind this triangular part is a big two-story warehouse. It's built with similar materials.

A Look at the Building's Past

The back part of the building, the warehouse, was built in 1896. A man named Hiram Weeks built it. He ran a feed store there. A feed store sells food for farm animals. He picked this spot because it was easy to move large amounts of goods. He could bring them from the nearby railroad tracks into the building. Then, he could move smaller amounts to his customers.

From Feed Store to Furniture Store

The feed business later became the City Feed Company. It stayed in this building until 1936. In 1905, the front triangular part was added. This new section was used for a vehicle repair business. Frederick Bedard and Henry Carlisle ran this business.

In 1937, the Giroux brothers bought the building. They opened a furniture store. They said it was the biggest furniture store in Vermont! They also used the nearby railroad to get their furniture delivered. The Giroux Furniture Company closed in the 2000s. It had been open for almost 70 years.
