He served the Duke of Parma, a powerful Spanish leader, during the Anglo-Spanish War (1585–1604). This war was a long conflict between England and Spain. In September 1586, George Cressiac was captured by an English commander, Lord Willoughby. This happened after a fight where Cressiac was defeated.
A Commander in the Anglo-Spanish War
George Cressiac was an Albanian chief and commander. He fought for the Duke of Parma, who was a Spanish leader. This was during the Anglo-Spanish War (1585–1604). This war lasted from 1585 to 1604. It involved England, led by Queen Elizabeth I, and Spain.
The Battle of Zutphen
In 1585, Queen Elizabeth I sent English soldiers to help the people of the Netherlands. They were fighting against their Spanish rulers. On September 22, 1586, a major event happened. It was near a city called Zutphen. This is known as the Battle of Zutphen.
Lord Willoughby was an English commander. He was leading the English forces. George Cressiac was in charge of a Spanish convoy. A convoy is a group of vehicles or ships traveling together. Cressiac was following orders from the Duke of Parma.
Fighting began when the English attacked the Spanish convoy. The Spanish soldiers were on higher ground. They charged towards the English. Lord Willoughby, along with other English leaders like Lord Audley and Sir Philip Sidney, fought bravely. During the battle, Lord Willoughby faced George Cressiac directly. Lord Willoughby managed to defeat Cressiac. Cressiac fell into a ditch. He then surrendered to Lord Willoughby. He said, "I yield myself to you, for that you be a seemly knight." This meant he gave up because he respected Lord Willoughby as a skilled knight.
