Glen Cannich facts for kids
Glen Cannich (which means Gleann Chanaich in Scottish Gaelic) is a long valley in the Northwest Highlands of Scotland. A river called the River Cannich flows right through it. This river starts from a large reservoir called Loch Mullardoch. It then flows east until it meets the River Affric near the village of Cannich. When these two rivers join, they form the River Glass.

Exploring Glen Cannich
Glen Cannich is a beautiful part of the Scottish Highlands. It's known for its stunning scenery, including mountains, forests, and many lochs (Scottish for lakes).
The Journey of the River Cannich
The River Cannich begins its journey at Loch Mullardoch, which is a large man-made lake. As the river flows downstream from Loch Mullardoch, it passes through several smaller natural lochs. These include Loch a' Bhana, Loch Sealbhanach, Loch Carrie, and Loch Craskie. The river flows through each of these, connecting them like beads on a string.
Other Waterways in the Glen
Besides the main river, many other lochs are found within the wider area of Glen Cannich. These include Loch an Fraoich-choire, Coire Lochan, Loch a' Choire Dhomhain, Loch a' Choire Bhig, Loch Tuill Bhearnach, and Lochan a' Mhill Dhuibh.
The river also creates two impressive waterfalls as it flows through the narrower eastern part of the glen. These are called Eas Maol Mhairi and Eas an Fhithich. Many smaller streams, known as "burns," flow down from the mountains on both sides of the river. The biggest of these are the Abhainn a' Choilich and Abhainn Sithidh. These two burns start high up on the eastern slopes of a mountain called Sgùrr nan Ceathramhnan.
What Happens in Glen Cannich?
A small public road runs up Glen Cannich from Cannich village. It goes all the way to the dam at Loch Mullardoch. This dam is part of a hydro-electric scheme, which means it helps to create electricity using the power of flowing water.
Besides generating power, the main activities in the glen are:
- Forestry: Growing and managing trees for wood.
- Deer Stalking: This is a type of hunting for deer, which is carefully managed in Scotland.
Glen Cannich is a quiet and wild place, perfect for enjoying nature and seeing Scottish wildlife.
