Glen Joseph Ella was born on June 5, 1959. He is a famous Australian rugby union player and coach. Glen played as a fullback for teams like Randwick and Manly. He also played for New South Wales. In the 1980s, he even represented Australia, but he wasn't part of the first Rugby World Cup team in 1987.
About Glen Ella
Glen Ella grew up in La Perouse, New South Wales. He was one of 12 children in his family! Many of his family members were also great athletes. His twin brother, Mark, and another brother, Gary, both played rugby for Australia. His sister, Marcia, played netball for Australia. Glen went to school at Matraville High School.
Playing Rugby
Glen started playing rugby at Matraville High School. Soon, he was good enough to play for New South Wales in schoolboy rugby.
He played his first game for Australia, known as the Wallabies, in 1982. This game was against Scotland at Ballymore Stadium. Glen played as the fullback. His second game for the Wallabies was in 1983 against Italy. Glen played his last two games for Australia in 1985. These matches were against Canada and Fiji. Australia won both of these games easily.
Coaching Rugby
After his playing career, Glen Ella became a rugby coach. He was an assistant coach for the Wallabies during the 1995 Rugby World Cup in South Africa.
Glen and his family moved to England, where he coached a team called Stourbridge for six months. He also helped the Brumbies team as a technical adviser. Later, he coached the Australian Sevens team, which plays a faster version of rugby with fewer players.
Glen also worked as an assistant coach for the Wallabies under coach Eddie Jones. He took on a similar role with the Canadian team before their 2007 Rugby World Cup games. In 2009, he joined a special group that helped choose players for the Fiji Rugby Union team.
In 2016, Glen was the backs' coach for the England team. This was when they toured Australia, and Eddie Jones was their main coach.
