Glen Ogle viaduct
The Glen Ogle viaduct, a cool old railway bridge.

Glen Ogle (which means Gleann Ogail in Scottish Gaelic) is a long, narrow valley in Scotland. It stretches for about 7 miles (11 kilometers) from a village called Lochearnhead up to Lix Toll. At Lix Toll, the valley opens up into another valley known as Glen Dochart.

A small stream called the Ogle Burn flows through the middle of this steep-sided valley. It starts from a small lake called Lochan Lairig Cheile at the very top of the glen.

An old military road, built way back in 1749 by Major William Caulfeild, can still be seen from the main road today. The British Army used this road to help keep peace in the Scottish Highlands after a big event called the Jacobite rising of 1745.

Weather in Glen Ogle

The weather in Glen Ogle is generally colder than in most parts of the United Kingdom. It has what scientists call a "subpolar oceanic climate." This means it's often cool, wet, and windy, even in summer.

Walking the Old Railway Line

You can explore Glen Ogle by walking along an old footpath. This path used to be part of the Callander and Oban Railway, a train line that is no longer in use. The path leads you to the highest point of the glen and to where the Killin Junction train station once stood.

A really cool part of this walk is crossing the Glen Ogle viaduct. This is a long bridge, about 150 yards (137 meters) long, that was built for the railway between 1866 and 1870. Even though it was first planned to have 20 arches, it was built with 12 strong stone arches. It's now a historic structure, listed as a Category B building.
