Glenbervie House is a large, impressive home located near Glenbervie, in Scotland. It's special because it includes parts of a much older castle! Imagine living in a house that used to be a castle.

History of Glenbervie

Glenbervie has a long and interesting past. It started as a strong castle many centuries ago.

Early Castle Days

The first castle at Glenbervie was built in the 1200s. It was owned by the powerful Melville family. This family was important because they controlled old paths over the Mounth, a mountain range.

In 1296, a famous visitor stayed at the castle. King Edward I of England spent one night there. He was on his way to Aberdeen during a time when England was trying to take control of Scotland.

The castle was changed and updated in the 1300s. It was common for castles to be improved over time.

New Owners and Changes

Over the years, the castle changed hands through marriages. In 1468, the castle went to the Auchinleck family. This happened when Elizabeth Melville, an heiress, married into that family.

Then, in 1496, another heiress named Elizabeth Auchinleck married into the Douglas family. This meant the castle became theirs. More changes were made to the castle in the 1400s.

A Time of Conflict

In 1572, the castle faced a difficult time. A man named Adam Gordon of Auchindoun attacked Glenbervie. He managed to capture the castle during a period of conflict in Scotland. This conflict is known as the Marian civil war.

Becoming a House

The castle was sold in 1675 to Robert Burnett of Leys. Over time, the castle was changed even more. It slowly became less of a fortress and more of a grand home.

Major updates happened in 1700 and again in 1854. These changes helped turn the old castle into the beautiful Glenbervie House we know today.
