Glenbrook, Oregon facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Glenbrook was once a busy logging town located in Benton County, Oregon, in the United States. A logging town is a community that grew up around the timber industry, where trees were cut down and processed into lumber. Glenbrook was an important place for this work many years ago.

Glenbrook: A Town Built on Trees

Glenbrook was found west of Alpine Road and south of Dawson in Oregon. Its exact location is at 44°18′49″N 123°24′23″W / 44.31361°N 123.40639°W / 44.31361; -123.40639. This small community played a key role in the lumber industry of its time.

How Glenbrook Began

The town of Glenbrook started because of a sawmill. In 1919, the Alsea River Lumber Company built a sawmill there. A sawmill is a factory where logs are cut into planks and boards. At the same time, a special railroad was built to carry logs from the nearby forests to the sawmill.

The town itself grew up around this busy sawmill. In late August 1920, Glenbrook was officially "christened" or celebrated with a big parade and a barbecue. This event marked the start of the town's life as a logging center.

What is Left of Glenbrook Today?

Today, very little remains of the original town of Glenbrook. Most of the buildings and the sawmill are gone. The main thing you can still see is the mill pond. This pond was likely used to store logs before they were cut at the sawmill. Glenbrook is now mostly a memory of Oregon's logging history.
