River Livet Packhorse Bridge
Remains of a late 18th-century bridge over the River Livet

Glenlivet is a beautiful glen (which means a narrow valley) located in the Scottish Highlands. A river called the River Livet flows through this valley.

The River Livet starts high up in the Ladder Hills. It then flows through a small village called Tomnavoulin and past a place known as the Bridgend of Glenlivet. You can even see the remains of an old bridge from the late 1700s there! The River Livet eventually joins the River Avon, which is one of the main rivers that flows into the larger River Spey.

Glenlivet is well-known for a large area of land called the Glenlivet Estate. It is also famous for a type of Scottish drink called The Glenlivet whisky. A historical event, the Battle of Glenlivet, took place here on October 3, 1594.

Understanding the Name: Livet

Have you ever wondered what the name "Livet" means? People think it might come from the Gaelic words liobh and ait. These words together could mean "slippery place" or "smooth place."

Another idea is that the name "Livet" is even older. It might be a very early Gaelic or pre-Gaelic name. In this case, it could mean "full of water" or "floody." This makes sense because a river flows through the glen!
