How This Plant Got Its Name
Discovering and Naming the Plant
Plants get scientific names so everyone can identify them. The first person to describe Glischrocaryon flavescens was a botanist named James Drummond. He found this plant and gave it a name.
Later, in 1970, another botanist named Anthony Edward Orchard studied the plant again. He made some changes to its classification. That's how it got its current scientific name, Glischrocaryon flavescens. This new name was shared in a science magazine called Taxon.
What Glischrocaryon flavescens Looks Like
This plant is strong and grows in clumps. It has creamy yellow flowers that grow on long stems called scapes. You can often see these flowers in February or between August and December.
The plant can grow to be quite tall, from about 0.3 meters (about a foot) to 1.5 meters (about five feet) high. It likes to grow in sandy soil that might have some clay or even be stony. You can often find it on open plains and rocky hills.
Where Glischrocaryon flavescens Grows
This plant is found in two main parts of Australia: South Australia and Western Australia. It's less common further north or in the very dry central parts of Australia.
In Western Australia, you can find it in the southwest area. It also grows in a drier region known as the Eremaean botanical province.
Plant Life and Animals
This plant is important for some animals. For example, it attracts a type of parrot called the moyadong. This parrot is also known as the Platycercus icterotis. The plant provides something important for these birds.
