Glória Menezes was born on October 19, 1934, in Pelotas, Brazil. Her full birth name was Nilcedes Soares Guimarães. Her unique first name, Nilcedes, was created by combining her father's name, José Nilo, and her mother's name, Mercedes.

When she was six years old, her family moved to São Paulo. There, she studied at the University of São Paulo's School of Dramatic Arts. She was very active and even started her own theater group called Jovens Independentes (Independent Young People).

Glória's professional acting career began in 1959. She started on TV Tupi in São Paulo, starring in the telenovela Um Lugar ao Sol. In 1962, she appeared in the famous film O Pagador de Promessas. This movie was a big success.
