Satellite Awards facts for kids

The Satellite Awards are special prizes given out every year. They are presented by a group called the International Press Academy. These awards are often talked about in magazines and websites that cover movies and TV shows.

The awards were first called the Golden Satellite Awards. The big award shows happen each year at the InterContinental Hotel in Century City, Los Angeles.

Award Categories

The Satellite Awards honor many different achievements. They are split into sections for movies, TV shows, and even new digital media.

Film Awards

These awards celebrate the best in movies:

• Best Actor: For the best male actor in a movie.
• Best Actress: For the best female actor in a movie.
• Best Animated or Mixed Media Feature: For the best animated film, or one that mixes animation with live action.
• Best Art Direction and Production Design: For the best look and feel of a movie, including sets and props.
• Best Cast: Given to the entire group of actors in a movie. This award started in 2004.
• Best Cinematography: For the best camera work and lighting in a movie.
• Best Costume Design: For the best outfits and clothing created for a movie.
• Best Director: For the person who best guided the making of a movie.
• Best Documentary Film: For the best non-fiction movie.
• Best Editing: For the best way a movie is put together, scene by scene.
• Best Film: For the overall best movie of the year.
• Best Foreign Language Film: For the best movie not made in English.
• Best Original Score: For the best music written specifically for a movie.
• Best Original Song: For the best new song written for a movie.
• Best Screenplay – Adapted: For the best movie script based on another story, like a book.
• Best Screenplay – Original: For the best movie script that is a brand new story.
• Best Sound: For the best sound effects and audio in a movie. This award started in 1999.
• Best Supporting Actor: For the best male actor in a smaller, but important, role.
• Best Supporting Actress: For the best female actor in a smaller, but important, role.
• Best Visual Effects: For the best computer-generated images and special effects.

In 2011, the awards changed how they gave out some film prizes. They combined the "Drama" and "Comedy/Musical" categories into one for Best Film, Actor, Actress, and Supporting Actor/Actress.

Television Awards

These awards recognize great work in TV shows and movies made for television:

• Best Actor – Drama Series: For the best male actor in a TV drama.
• Best Actor – Musical or Comedy Series: For the best male actor in a TV musical or comedy.
• Best Actor – Miniseries or Television Film: For the best male actor in a short TV series or a TV movie.
• Best Actress – Drama Series: For the best female actor in a TV drama.
• Best Actress – Musical or Comedy Series: For the best female actor in a TV musical or comedy.
• Best Actress – Miniseries or Television Film: For the best female actor in a short TV series or a TV movie.
• Best Cast (or Best Ensemble): Given to the entire group of actors in a TV series. This award started in 2005.
• Best TV Series – Drama: For the overall best TV drama show.
• Best TV Series - Genre: For the best TV series in a specific genre, like sci-fi or fantasy.
• Best TV Series – Musical or Comedy: For the overall best TV musical or comedy show.
• Best Miniseries or Television Film: For the best short TV series or a movie made for TV.
• Best Miniseries: For the best short TV series.
• Best Television Film: For the best movie made for television.
• Best Supporting Actor: For the best male actor in a smaller role in a TV series, miniseries, or TV movie. This award started in 2001.
• Best Supporting Actress: For the best female actor in a smaller role in a TV series, miniseries, or TV movie. This award started in 2001.

New Media Awards

These awards look at achievements in digital entertainment:

• Outstanding Overall Blu-Ray/DVD: For the best Blu-Ray or DVD release.
• Outstanding Youth Blu-Ray/DVD: For the best Blu-Ray or DVD release made for young people.
• Outstanding Mobile Game: For the best game played on a phone or tablet.
• Outstanding Platform Action/Adventure Game: For the best action or adventure video game.
• Outstanding Role Playing Game: For the best role-playing video game.

Special Achievement Awards

These are special honors given for outstanding careers or contributions:

• Auteur Award: Given to a director who has a unique and strong personal style in their films. This award started in 2005.
• Mary Pickford Award: Named after a famous silent film star, this award honors a person's entire career in the entertainment industry. It has been given since 1996.
• Nikola Tesla Award: Named after the famous inventor, this award celebrates great achievements in film technology. It started in 2002.
• Humanitarian Award: Given to someone who has done great work to help others. This award has been given since 2010.
• Outstanding New Talent: Recognizes a new actor or filmmaker who shows great promise. This award started in 1996.
