Expanding His Territory
Gonzalo Fernández is first mentioned in records in 899 as the Count of Burgos. He worked hard to expand his territory. He stretched his rule from the Cantabrian Mountains all the way to the Arlanza river. This river then became the border with the Muslim lands nearby.
Taking Control of Lara
To expand his territory, Gonzalo had to take control of the stronghold of Carazo. This was a strong Muslim base that controlled the area. After a long and difficult fight, Gonzalo's forces won. He then made his main fort in Lara. The Lara valley became a very important place for his family.
A Family's Legacy
Years later, Gonzalo's son, Fernán González, helped Castile become almost independent. This secured the area for five generations of their family. Eventually, Castile became a kingdom under Fernando I of Castile from the Jimenez dynasty.
Building Monasteries
Gonzalo Fernández was also involved in building important religious places. His name first appears in a document from the Monastery of San Pedro de Cardeña in 899. This monastery later became very influential in Castile. He also founded another important monastery, San Pedro de Arlanza, in 912.
Leading the Offensive
In 912, Gonzalo played a key role in a big military push. This was part of the Castilian offensive towards the Duero river. During this time, he helped settle old villages like Haza, Clunia, and San Esteban de Gormaz.
Life at Court and Later Years
Gonzalo Fernández is first called "Count of Castile" in a document from January 8, 914. He appears again in a document from January 1, 915. He was present at important meetings with other nobles at the Leonese Court.
Disappearance and Exile
Gonzalo was last seen at court before the Leonese were defeated in the Battle of Valdejunquera in 920. After this, people thought he had died. However, some historians believe he might have fallen out of favor with the court. This could have led to him being sent away. A person with his name and title appears in documents from the Court of Navarre between 924 and 930.
His Family
Gonzalo's wife was Muniadona. She might have been from the Asturian royal family. She managed their family lands and ruled the county while their son, Fernán González, was young. Gonzalo and Muniadona also had another son named Ramiro.
Gonzalo Fernández was buried in a vault at San Pedro de Arlanza. His brother, Nuño Fernández, took over as Count of Burgos after him.
