The Abbey of San Pedro de Cardeña
The Abbey of San Pedro de Cardeña is a very old monastery. It was built between the 9th and 17th centuries.
This abbey is famous because it was once the resting place of El Cid. He was a brave warrior from the 11th century. His wife, Jimena Díaz, and even his horse, Babieca, were also said to be buried here.
During the Napoleonic Wars, soldiers searched the tombs for treasure. El Cid and his wife's remains were moved. They were later reburied in the city of Burgos.
Since the 1940s, the abbey has been home to the Trappist order. These are monks who live a quiet life of prayer and work.
