The River Arlanzón is a river located in northern Spain. It starts high up in the Sierra de la Demanda mountains. This area is part of the Province of Burgos. The Arlanzón River flows for about 131 kilometers (81 miles). It eventually joins another river called the Arlanza River. This meeting point is near a town called Quintana del Puente in the Province of Palencia.
The Arlanzón in Burgos
The Arlanzón River flows right through the city of Burgos. Even though it's outside the very old part of the city, it has always been important. Long ago, people in Burgos used the river for their wool industry. They would wash and process wool using the river's water.
Burgos also has beautiful parks along the riverbanks. These parks are great places for people to relax and have fun. Two famous parks are the Paseo del Espolón and the Paseo de la Isla. The Paseo del Espolón was created in the late 1700s. The Paseo de la Isla was made in the early 1800s.
Making the River Healthier
Spain has special groups called Basin Agencies. These agencies work to make rivers healthier and better connected. For the Arlanzón River, the main agency is the Confederación Hidrográfica del Duero. This group looks after the Douro river basin.
In the 2000s, a lot of work was done to improve the Arlanzón River in Burgos. They fixed problems caused by things like weirs. Weirs are small dams that can block fish from moving freely. Now, special structures called fish passes help fish like trout swim up and down the river. This helps the fish find food and places to lay their eggs. It also makes the river's ecosystem much healthier.
