The Arlanza River is a beautiful river in Spain. It starts high up in the mountains and flows for about 160 kilometers (100 miles). This river is important for the areas it passes through. It also gives its name to a special wine region.

The Arlanza River's Journey

Where Does It Start and End?

The Arlanza River begins in a place called Fuente Sanza. This spot is in the Sierra de la Demanda mountains. It's close to the town of Quintanar de la Sierra. The river starts at an elevation of 1,282 meters (4,206 feet).

The river's journey ends when it joins another river. The Arlanza flows into the Pisuerga River. This meeting point is near the town of Torquemada. The Pisuerga River then flows into the larger River Duero.

Journey Through Spain

As the Arlanza River flows, it travels through the Province of Burgos in Spain. It passes by several towns and villages. These include Castrovido, Salas de los Infantes, Covarrubias, and Lerma.

The river generally flows from east to west. It runs roughly parallel to the River Duero, but to the north of it.

Main Tributaries

A tributary is a smaller river or stream that flows into a larger one. The main tributary of the Arlanza River is the River Arlanzón. The Arlanzón joins the Arlanza near a place called Quintana del Puente. After this, the Arlanza soon meets the Pisuerga River.

A Special Wine Region

The Arlanza River is so important that it gives its name to a special area. This area is known as the Arlanza wine region. A "Denominación de Origen" (DO) is a special label in Spain. It means that wines from this area have a certain quality and come from a specific place.
