Where is the Sierra de la Demanda?
The Sierra de la Demanda is in the western part of the Sistema Ibérico mountains. It stretches across two Spanish regions: the eastern part of the province of Burgos and the western part of La Rioja. It also borders a large flat area in Spain called the Meseta Central.
Tallest Mountains and Snow
The highest mountains in the Sierra de la Demanda are:
- Monte San Lorenzo (2270 meters or 7,448 feet tall) – This is the highest peak in the whole range.
- Monte San Millán (2131 meters or 6,991 feet tall)
These tall mountains usually get a lot of snow. You can often see snow on their peaks from October all the way through May.
Fun in the Snow
If you love skiing, you're in luck! The Valdezcaray ski resort is located right here in the Sierra de la Demanda. It's a popular spot for winter sports. South of this range, you'll find another mountain area called the Picos de Urbión.
Animals Living Here
This mountain range is a special home for a small creature called the Lissotriton helveticus punctillatus. This is a type of palmate newt. Newts are small amphibians, a bit like salamanders, that live both in water and on land. This specific kind of newt was first described in 1970.
