Exploring the Geography of Picos de Urbión
The Picos de Urbión are located in northern Spain. They are found in the areas of Duruelo de la Sierra and Viniegra de Abajo. These mountains cross the borders of the Soria and Burgos provinces. They are also part of the regions of Castile and León and La Rioja (Spain).
Rivers and Water Basins
Two important Spanish rivers start in these mountains. The Duero River and the Najerilla River both begin their journeys here. The Picos de Urbión also act as a natural divider. They separate the water basins of the Ebro River and the Duero River. This means that rain falling on one side flows to the Ebro, and on the other side, it flows to the Duero.
Glaciers and Mountain Lakes
Long ago, glaciers helped shape the landscape of these mountains. As glaciers moved, they carved out valleys and hollows. This created beautiful lakes like the Laguna de Urbión and the Laguna Negra. These lakes are popular spots for hiking and enjoying nature.
Weather and Snowfall
The highest peaks of the Picos de Urbión often get a lot of snow. They are usually covered in snow from October all the way through May. To the north of these mountains, you can find another mountain range called the Sierra de la Demanda.
