Goodman's Buildings is a special old building in Annandale, Sydney, Australia. It has shops and homes inside. This building is important because it's listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register. This means it's a heritage site that needs to be protected for future generations. It was added to the list on 2 April 1999.

History of Goodman's Buildings

Annandale was planned to be a "model township." This means it was designed to be a perfect and well-organized town. The person who developed it, John Young, made Johnston Street very wide. He wanted it to be the most impressive street in the whole area.

Walter Goodman, who sold shoes and was a businessman, chose this spot. He wanted to build a large "emporium," which is like a big department store. Famous architects, Sheerin and Hennessy, designed the building. It was built in different parts between 1890 and 1912. You can still see how it was built in stages by looking at the different parts of the building's front. The part facing Johnston Street was built first.

Once the building was finished, Mr. Goodman lived in a grand apartment on the first floor. He rented out the shops on the ground floor to other businesses.

In the late 1980s, the NSW Department of Planning helped restore the outside of the building. This was part of a plan to make the Parramatta Road area look better. They fixed the verandahs (covered porches) and painted the outside. They even found out the original colors of the building. A paint company donated a lot of paint for the project. Today, the building has many different owners and people living or working there.

What Goodman's Buildings Looks Like

Goodman's Buildings is a two-story building. It's made of brick, but it's covered in a smooth, finished surface. It has fancy "Victorian Filigree" decorations. These are delicate, lace-like designs often made of cast iron.

The front of the building curves around the corner where Parramatta Road and Johnston Street meet. On the ground floor, there are thirteen separate shops. Above them are homes. The shops have modern fronts with awnings (shelters) hanging over them. There are narrow balconies along the Parramatta Road side. Along Johnston Street, there are wider balconies with posts.

All the first-floor balconies have pretty cast iron lace railings and posts. These posts hold up the wavy, corrugated iron roof. Large, double-hung timber windows are placed evenly along the first floor. Above these windows are decorative ledges and moldings. The top of the building has a decorative wall called a parapet. This parapet has molded cement railings and decorative urns at the end of each section.

You can see a special triangular part called a "pediment" on the building. It has the name of the building on it. These pediments are at the western end of the Parramatta Road side, on the corner, and at the northern end of the Johnston Street side. The decorative fronts and parapet hide the sloped roofs and back parts of the building. These back parts extend all the way to Albion Lane.

Why Goodman's Buildings is Important

Goodman's Buildings is very important for several reasons. It has high historic, aesthetic (how it looks), and social value. It's quite rare to find such a grand "emporium" style building from the 1890s in the inner city.

The building is still mostly in its original condition. It shows what a Victorian-style building from 1890 looked like. It still has its original size, character, and details. The first-floor balconies and the unique parapet and pediments are especially well-preserved.

The building is on a very noticeable corner. It stands out and helps define the look of the Parramatta Road and Johnston Street areas. It's a landmark that adds a lot to the streetscape.
