Goolarabooloo Millibinyarri is a special place in Western Australia. It is an Aboriginal community. This community is located about 12 kilometers north of Broome. It is found in the beautiful Kimberley region.
The community is along the coast, in an area called Coconut Wells. Coconut Wells is a small area with about 30 rural homes. It was first set up in the 1970s. People hoped to grow plants there, but it didn't work out. There wasn't enough water for farming.
Millibinyarri was started by an important Elder named Paddy Roe. This happened in the mid-1970s. His grandson, Ronald Roe, shared this history.
Native Title Rights
The Goolarabooloo Millibinyarri community is on land with a special history. This land is part of a "native title" area. Native title means that Aboriginal people have rights to their traditional lands. These rights are recognized by Australian law. The specific claim for this area is called the Rubibi Community claim.
How the Community is Run
The Goolarabooloo Millibinyarri community manages itself. It does this through a group called the Goolarabooloo / Millibinyarri Indigenous Corporation. This group was officially formed on July 16, 2009. It helps the community make decisions and work together.
Planning for the Future
The community has a plan for its land called Goolarabooloo Millibinyarri Layout Plan No.1. This plan helps decide how the land will be used. It follows rules from the State Planning Policy 3.2 Aboriginal Settlements. The community approved this plan on December 20, 2002. The Western Australian Planning Commission also approved it on August 3, 2005. You can find more details about this plan online. It is on the website of the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage.
