Gordion cups are a special type of ancient Greek drinking cup. They are the earliest and smallest examples of what are called "Little-Master cups." These cups were popular around 560 BC in a region of Greece called Attica.

What Makes a Gordion Cup Special?
Gordion cups have a unique look. The top edge, or "lip," of the cup is painted black. This black part stands out clearly from the rest of the cup.
Handle Zone and Foot
Around the handles, you'll see a black stripe near the top edge. Often, there's another stripe near the bottom edge too. The bottom part of the cup, called the "foot," is long and thin. It often has decorative stripes painted on it.
Inside the Cup
Just like another type of cup called a Siana cup, the inside of a Gordion cup has a round picture. This picture is usually surrounded by a pattern that looks like tongues. It's no surprise they look similar to Siana cups, as Siana cups were the direct ancestors of these Little-Master cups.
Where Did the Name "Gordion" Come From?
The name "Gordion cup" comes from an ancient city called Gordion. A very important example of this type of cup was found there. This particular cup was made by a potter named Ergotimos and painted by an artist named Kleitias. Their names, or "signatures," are usually found right between the beautiful leaf-like designs near the handles.
