Gordon Barracks: A Look Inside
Gordon Barracks was built between 1933 and 1935. It was designed by J and W Wittet. The buildings are made from strong granite blocks. They are arranged around a main square.
Building History
The main building is two stories tall. It used to be a club for junior soldiers. It has a special roof and fancy details. Many other buildings on the base are also important. These include a medical centre, barracks where soldiers live, a guard room, and an officers' mess.
When it first opened in 1935, Gordon Barracks became the main base for the Gordon Highlanders. This was a famous Scottish army regiment. They moved here from their old base, Castlehill Barracks.
Changes Over Time
In 1960, Gordon Barracks became a big training centre. It was used to train infantry soldiers from the Highland Brigade.
Later, in 1970, things changed again. Adult soldiers from the Highland Brigade moved to a different base. At the same time, younger soldiers from the Lowland Brigade moved into Gordon Barracks. They trained here until 1986, when the barracks stopped training junior soldiers.
Who Uses the Barracks Today?
Today, Gordon Barracks is still a busy place. Many different military groups use it. This includes units from the Territorial Army (TA). These units often help with communications and medical support.
