Gosho Aoyama, born on June 21, 1963, is a famous Japanese manga artist. His real name is Yoshimasa Aoyama. He is best known for creating the popular manga series Case Closed, also known as Detective Conan. This series started in 1994 and is still ongoing. By 2017, his manga series had sold over 250 million copies around the world.

Early Life and Education

Gosho Aoyama was very good at drawing from a young age. When he was in elementary school, his painting called "Yukiai War" won a competition. This painting was even shown at a big department store in Tottori.

Aoyama has two older brothers. One of his brothers is a scientist. He sometimes helps Aoyama come up with clever ideas for the mysteries in Case Closed. His other brother is a doctor.

After high school, Aoyama went to Nihon University College of Art in Tokyo. While he was an art student, he won a comic contest for new students in 1986. He also had a part-time job at Tokyo Disneyland. There, he painted backgrounds for the "Pirates of the Caribbean" ride.

A Career in Manga

Aoyama started his career as a manga artist in 1987. His first work was Chotto Mattete, which was published in a magazine called Weekly Shōnen Sunday. Soon after, he began another series called Magic Kaito in the same magazine.

Between 1988 and 1993, Aoyama created the series Yaiba. This story was collected into 24 books. He also released other manga series that were shorter, like Third Baseman No.4. He also made a collection of his shorter stories. In 1994, Aoyama helped design characters for a video game called Live A Live.

In January 1994, Aoyama began his most famous series, Case Closed. This manga is still being published today.

Gosho Aoyama has received several awards for his manga work. In 1992, he won the Shogakukan Manga Award for Yaiba. This award is given to great manga artists. He won the same award again in 2001 for his series Case Closed.

His hometown, Hokuei, Tottori, has also honored him. They have created projects to celebrate his work. For example, there is a "Conan Bridge" and statues of characters from Case Closed. On March 18, 2007, the Gosho Aoyama Manga Factory opened. This is a museum that celebrates Aoyama's amazing career as a manga artist.

Personal Life

On May 5, 2005, Gosho Aoyama married Minami Takayama. She is a singer and also the voice actress for the character Conan in the Case Closed anime show. They later divorced on December 10, 2007.

Manga Works

Here are some of Gosho Aoyama's well-known manga series:

  • Wait a Minute (ちょっとまってて, Chotto Mattete) (1987)
    This story is about a boy genius whose time machine sends his friend two years into the future.
  • Magic Kaito (1987–present)
    This series is about Kaito Kid, a mysterious thief who is also a master of disguise. His secret identity is a high school student named Kaito Kuroba. Kaito Kid often appears in Case Closed too.
  • Yaiba (1988–1993)
    This is a manga series about a young samurai named Yaiba Kurogane. It was also made into an anime TV show.
  • 3rd Base 4th (4番サード, Yonban Sādo) (1991–1993)
    This manga tells the story of a baseball player who buys a magical bat. The bat helps him hit every pitch, but he has to pay for each hit!
  • Gosho Aoyama's Collection of Short Stories (青山剛昌短編集, Aoyama Gōshō Tanpenshū)
    This book contains various short stories written by Aoyama over the years.
  • Case Closed/Detective Conan (1994–present)
    This is Aoyama's most famous ongoing series. It's about a genius high school detective named Shinichi Kudo. He is turned into a child by mysterious men and takes on the name Conan Edogawa. While trying to find these men, he solves many difficult mysteries. As of April 2025, this series has been collected into 107 volumes.
  • Tell Me a Lie (〜私にウソをついて〜, ~Watashi ni Uso o Tsuite~) (2007)
    This is a one-shot story about a girl who can read people's minds just by looking into their eyes.
