The Governor's Mansion Historic District is a special area in Little Rock, Arkansas. It's like a big outdoor museum filled with old buildings. This district is famous for having many well-preserved houses from the late 1800s and early 1900s. It shows off different styles of homes designed by a famous local architect named Charles L. Thompson. This neighborhood is the oldest part of the city that still feels like a residential area today.

Exploring the Historic District
The Governor's Mansion Historic District is located south of downtown Little Rock. This area used to be a large country estate until 1869. Most of the houses and buildings you see there were built between 1880 and 1940. It's a great place to see how people lived and what their homes looked like a long time ago.
Architectural Styles You'll See
You can find many different kinds of old houses here. Some are beautiful Queen Anne Victorian homes. These houses often have towers, fancy porches, and colorful designs. The Hornibrook House is a great example of this style, built with brick.
Another popular style is Colonial Revival. These homes often look grand and formal, like the Hotze House at 1619 S. Louisiana Street. It's considered one of the best examples of this style in Little Rock.
The Craftsman style is also very common in the district. There are over 92 Craftsman houses. Most of them are two-story brick homes that are comfortable and practical. They often have natural materials and simple, strong designs.
Churches in the District
Besides homes, the district also includes several historic churches. Out of ten churches in the area, five are considered very important to the district's history. These buildings add to the unique look and feel of the neighborhood.
How the District Grew Over Time
When the Governor's Mansion Historic District was first recognized in 1978, it covered about 65 acres. This area included the Arkansas Governor's Mansion grounds and nearby streets.
Later, people realized that many more important buildings were outside this first boundary. So, in 1988, the district was made much larger. It grew by about 224.5 acres and added 473 more historic buildings. Since then, there have been a few smaller additions, including one in 2002 that added 12 more buildings. This shows how important it is to protect these old homes and buildings for future generations.
