Ogun State is a special part of Nigeria. It was created on February 3, 1976. Before that, it was part of a bigger area called Western State. When Western State was divided, three new states were formed: Ogun, Ondo, and Oyo.
A governor is like the main leader of a state. They are in charge of making sure things run smoothly. This includes schools, roads, healthcare, and safety for everyone living there. Leaders of Ogun State: A Quick Look
Ogun State has been led by different people over the years. Some were military officers who took charge during times of military rule in Nigeria. Others were civilian governors, meaning they were chosen by the people through elections.
Military Governors and Administrators
When Nigeria was under military rule, leaders were often called "Governors" or "Administrators." They were usually high-ranking officers from the armed forces. They were appointed to lead the state, not elected by public vote.
- Saidu Ayodele Balogun was the first governor of Ogun State. He was a military leader and took office in March 1976. He served until July 1978.
- Harris Eghagha followed him, serving from July 1978 to October 1979. He was also a military governor.
- Oladipo Diya became governor in January 1984. He served until August 1985.
- Oladayo Popoola took over in August 1985 and served through 1986.
- Raji Alagbe Rasaki was governor from 1986 to December 1987.
- Mohammed Lawal served from December 1987 to August 1990.
- Oladeinde Joseph was governor from August 1990 to January 1992.
- Daniel Akintonde was an Administrator from December 1993 to August 1996.
- Sam Ewang served as Administrator from August 1996 to August 1998.
- Kayode Olofin-Moyin was the last military Administrator, serving from August 1998 to May 1999.
Civilian Governors: Elected by the People
When Nigeria returned to civilian rule, people got to vote for their leaders. These elected leaders are called civilian governors. They represent the political parties they belong to.
- Olabisi Onabanjo was the first civilian governor of Ogun State. He was elected in October 1979 and served until December 1983. He belonged to the UPN party.
- Olusegun Osoba served two times as a civilian governor. His first term was from January 1992 to November 1993. He was part of the SDP. His second term began in May 1999 and ended in May 2003. During his second term, he was with the AD and later the AC parties.
- Gbenga Daniel became governor in May 2003. He served until May 2011. He was a member of the PDP.
- Ibikunle Amosun took office in May 2011. He served until May 2019. He was part of the ACN and later the APC parties.
- Dapo Abiodun became governor in May 2019. He is currently serving as the governor of Ogun State. He belongs to the APC party.
