Grace Carteret, 1st Countess Granville facts for kids
Grace Carteret, 1st Countess Granville (born around 1667 – died October 18, 1744), was a very important woman in her time. She was known as Lady Grace Granville before she became Countess Granville in her own right. She was also the wife of George Carteret, 1st Baron Carteret.
Grace's Early Life
Grace was born in a place called Stowe, Kilkhampton in Cornwall, England. Her father was John Granville, 1st Earl of Bath, and her mother was Jane Wyche. She was born around the year 1667.
Marriage and Family
Grace married George Carteret, 1st Baron Carteret. He was born in the same year as her, 1667, and passed away in 1695. George became a Baron in 1681, which is a noble title.
Grace and George had two sons together:
- John Carteret (1690-1763). He later became the 2nd Earl Granville. John married twice and had children from both marriages.
- Philip Carteret (1692-1711). Sadly, Philip died young when he was only 19 years old. He was a student at Westminster School at the time. He was buried at Westminster Abbey.
George Carteret, Grace's husband, died in 1695 when he was only 28 years old.
Becoming Countess Granville
After her husband passed away, and her older brothers and sisters had also died, Grace received a special honor. In 1714, she was given the titles of Viscountess Carteret and Countess Granville. This was special because she received these titles in her own right, meaning she didn't get them through her husband. She was able to pass these important titles on to her elder son, John.
Grace Carteret lived to be 77 years old. She passed away at her family home, Hawnes, in Bedfordshire. This was just a few months after she attended her son John's second wedding. She was buried in a special vault at Westminster Abbey.
