The Story of Its Building
The idea for the Gran Teatro Cervantes came from a Spanish woman named Esperanza Orellana. She worked with her husband, Manuel Peña, and the owner, Antonio Gallego, to make it happen.
The very first stone of the theatre was placed on April 2, 1911, in a special ceremony. Building work finished quickly, and the theatre opened its doors in 1913. It was a very large theatre, able to hold about 1400 people at one time!
